ReliOn insulin syringes for diabetes patients are being recalled due to inaccurate information on their labels pertaining to their doses
ReliOn insulin syringes for diabetes patients are being recalled due to inaccurate information on their labels pertaining to their doses.

In total, Tyco Healthcare Group (Covidien) has issued the recall for as many as 4,710 boxes of the syringes, with up to 100 individual syringes in each box.

Diabetes patients who are subjected to insulin injections on a daily basis, need to know exactly how much insulin they are putting into their bodies. If they overdose in this process, they increase their risk of potentially fatal serious, life threatening side effects.

“The use of these syringes may lead to patients receiving an overdose of as much as 2.5 times the intended dose, which may lead to hypoglycemia, serious health consequences, and even death,” states an FDA news release.

The recall applies to the following products:
• Product name: ReliOn Insulin Syringes — 31 gauge 1 cc (with 100 syringes per box)
• Lot number: 813900 (on the back panel of the carton, or on the white paper backing of each syringe’s “peel pack”)
• Product identification number: 38396-0403-02 (on the top panel upper right-hand corner of the syringe box)

To date there have been no reports of diabetes patients overdosing on their insulin thanks to the mislabeled syringes.
