A vicious stomach flu has hit New York city and according to officials, as many as 400 people are traveling to hospital emergency rooms a day for treatment.

According to the city health department, cases of hospital visits that are flu related have jumped 19% in the last 2 weeks.

They say that the best way of protecting yourself from catching the bug is to wash your hands often.

The stomach flu is presenting with 2 main symptoms; vomiting and heavy, heavy diarrhea.

It can be spread from person to person by sharing food with an infected person, changing the diaper of a sick child, or coming into contact with a sick person’s vomit.

“Norovirus infection is a miserable experience, and can be serious if you become dehydrated,” said Sharon Balter, a medical epidemiologist at the Health Department.

Symptoms usually remain for a few days before clearing up on their own, she added.
