Ted Stevens Gives Final Speech
Ted Stevens, the longest-serving republican, gave his final speech today. His friends called him a teacher and role model, and family and staff cried.
Stevens said he wasn’t going to look back and he waited for a day when he would be vindicated.
Many came to hear his speech, and he was given a standing ovation, something that is against the senate’s rules.
Stevens, 85, has served on the senate for 40 years. He is appealing his felony convictions, but is not asking for a pardon from the president. Also departing was Senator Larry Craig, embroiled in the infamous men’s room scandal.
