Avandia Has More Safety Risks Than Actos

The diabetes drug Avandia has more safety risks for people taking it than other diabetes drugs say the researchers of a new study.
This is not the first study to find problems with Glaxo’s Avandia drug, as previous ones performed have linked it to increased risk of heart attack.
The researchers compared data from diabetes patients, some of whom took GlaxoSmithKline’s Avandia, while others took Takeda Pharmaceutical’s Actos.
Both drugs are taken by diabetes to help them better manage their blood sugar levels.
The study found that when it came to incidents of heart failure and death, the risk was much, much greater for those taking GSK’s Avandia.
“We hypothesize that many of the deaths were due to myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke,” said Dr. Wolfgang Winkelmayer of Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
The study can be found in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
