Bandits in Drag Steal Record Amount of Jewellery
Armed robbers, some of them dressed up as women, stole $108 million worth of diamond jewellery from a Harry Winston Boutique. This was one of the largest jewel-thefts in history.
The gang threatened employees with guns and hit some on the head before taking jewels from display cases yesterday. They spoke a foreign language from time to time and new the employees by name.
The same boutique had been targeted last October, and nearly $13 million of jewellery was taken from safes.
British authorities and French security firms say jewellery store-robberies and security van hold-ups are on the rise, and suspect it is related to the credit crunch.
