High Insulin Level Increases Breast Cancer Risk

High levels of insulin have been shown to increase breast cancer risk in obese women.
This finding comes from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study featuring more than 1600 participants.
The study participants were post-menopausal women, and were free of diabetes at the beginning of the study.
By analyzing blood levels of insulin, researchers learned that the blood sugar plays a significant risk when it comes to breast cancer.
They learned that women with high insulin levels, were up to 46% more likely to develop breast cancer.
The breast cancer risk was even higher for women not taking hormone therapy.
Researchers say that their finding, could explain the significant link already found between breast cancer and obesity.
The study can be found in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
