Group Wants Ban On Driving And Using Cellphone

January 12 - Everybody who likes talking on their cell phone while driving may not know that they are putting themselves and other drivers at risk of serious harm.

Realizing this, the National Safety Council is putting forth a recommendation that talking on the phone while driving be banned, with serious punishment for those who do not heed.

“The science tells [us] when [we're] on the phone while driving, it is a high-risk activity — very, very risky,” said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “But most people don’t understand that.”

Realizing that talking while driving can be a hazard, companies have introduced hands-free capabilities, but the group says that this does not reduce the risk associated with talking while driving because one’ attention is not fully on the road.

Recent studies have proven the dangers of talking on the phone while driving, due to a drivers’ attention span more focused on the phone than the road in front of them.

Another study found that driving while talking on the phone accounts for 6% of crashes in the US.
