Treating Weezing Children With Steroids Can Be Dangerous

January 22 (Ottawa) Treating Wheezing by children with steroids has been found not to work by researchers of a new study.
Wheezing occurs when the airways constrict, thus making it hard to breathe. When somebody wheezes, they make an audible whistling sound when they inhale.
Treating children who deal with wheezing has commonly resulted in steroid prescriptions, a fact that researchers not only say are useless, but can also be dangerous to their health.
Steroids open up the airway of a person who has asthma or is wheezing, thus making it easier for them to breathe.
The researchers based their study findings on reviewing the medical charts of British children who were taken to hospital due to them wheezing.
Whether or not a child was prescribed a steroid or not, did not change the length of time they were hospitalized.
The study can be found in todays’ New England Journal of Medicine.
